ABOUT TEACHING & LEARNING STUFF

An Established Educational Retailer With a Growing Product Assortment

Teaching & Learning Stuff has supported educators, schools, parents, and learners since 1993, offering educational materials, classroom supplies, learning tools, décor, games, and STEM/STEAM products. With 20,000+ products listed online and new items regularly added to its assortment, the business needed an eCommerce platform that could better connect product discovery, merchandising, inventory, and fulfillment workflows.

The business migrated from PrestaShop to Magento Open Source with Hyvä, while preserving the familiar brand experience for existing customers. The new platform provided a stronger foundation for catalog expansion, easier product discovery, streamlined order management, and improved customer engagement.

“Navigate Commerce understood what we needed from the migration and helped us move to a platform that gives us more flexibility across our eCommerce operations. And now we are leveraging digital commerce to its full capacity and efficiently!”
— Client, Teaching & Learning Stuff

THE CHALLENGE

Why Teaching & Learning Stuff Moved from PrestaShop to Magento

Teaching & Learning Stuff had an established brand and customer base, but the existing PrestaShop setup was becoming restrictive for the way the business needed to operate online. Inventory and order workflows required better coordination, while the customer experience needed stronger product discovery and follow-up.

The migration also had to protect the brand experience customers already knew. A complete redesign was not the objective. The priority was to change the underlying eCommerce technology while addressing the operational and customer-facing limitations of the existing platform.

Platform Limitations

The existing PrestaShop platform was limiting the eCommerce workflows the business needed to support and extend.

Inventory Management

Online and offline inventory needed better coordination to improve stock visibility and reduce manual operational work.

Order Processing

The new eCommerce platform needed to work alongside existing business systems to support smoother and more reliable order processing.

Customer Retention

The business needed automated customer workflows to reconnect with visitors and customers after their initial interaction or purchase.

Product Discovery

A large educational catalog required better search, navigation, and filtering so customers could narrow down products based on their needs.

Brand Continuity

The migration needed to change the underlying technology without unnecessarily changing the storefront identity and customer experience.

Our Approach

How We Handled the PrestaShop to Magento Migration

The project was planned around the way Teaching & Learning Stuff operates rather than treating the migration as a simple platform replacement.

We moved the store from PrestaShop to Magento Open Source and implemented Hyvä while retaining the existing brand direction. The solution also connected inventory, order processing, product discovery, and customer communication to support a more joined-up eCommerce operation.

Changing the Platform Without Starting the Brand Experience Over

Teaching & Learning Stuff had an established brand and customer experience, so a complete redesign was unnecessary. We moved the store from PrestaShop to Magento Open Source with Hyvä, while keeping the existing brand direction. Hyvä Checkout was also implemented to provide a faster, more streamlined checkout experience for customers.

Inventory & Order Operations

Connecting Online Sales With Business Operations

Inventory and order processing were important requirements of the migration. Modern Retail was introduced to support the point-of-sale and inventory requirements, while Magento was also connected with the client's existing CounterPoint ERP.

  • Order Processing Workflows
  • Online & Offline Inventory Coordination
  • Reduced Manual Operational Work

Product Search & Customer Retention

Helping Customers Find Products and Stay Connected

Teaching & Learning Stuff's product range requires customers to browse and filter across different educational needs. Smile Elastic Suite was implemented to improve search and navigation, while Klaviyo introduced customer workflows designed to reconnect with visitors and customers.

A Magento Store Connected to the Business Behind It

The value of the project extended beyond moving the storefront from PrestaShop to Magento. Magento became the eCommerce platform connecting the customer-facing store with inventory, order processing, product discovery, and customer communication workflows.

  • Greater platform flexibility — Magento Open Source provided greater flexibility for the eCommerce workflows required by the business.
  • Better inventory coordination Modern retail helped support inventory requirements across online and offline operations.
  • Connected order processing Magento was integrated with the client's existing Counter Point ERP to support order-related workflows.
  • Improved product discovery Smile Elastic Suite provided stronger search and filtering capabilities across the educational catalog.
  • Automated customer communication Klaviyo workflows created additional opportunities to reconnect with customers and support repeat engagement.
  • Familiar customer experience The project retained the established brand direction rather than replacing it with an unnecessary redesign.
  • Ongoing technical support Navigate Commerce continues to support enhancements and ongoing eCommerce requirements following the migration.

LESSONS FROM THE TEACHING & LEARNING STUFF PROJECT

What This PrestaShop to Magento Migration Taught Us

The Teaching & Learning Stuff project showed that an eCommerce migration creates the most value when the platform change is connected to the actual business workflows around the store.

A Platform Migration Should Start With Business Workflows

Moving products and customers to a new platform is only one part of a migration. Inventory, order processing, search, customer communication, and other operational requirements need to be considered before implementation begins.

Keep the Customer Experience That Already Works

A platform migration does not automatically require a complete redesign. Teaching & Learning Stuff already had an established brand, so the project focused on changing the technology while retaining the customer-facing direction.

Inventory Is Part of the Online Customer Experience

For businesses operating across online and offline channels, inventory accuracy affects what customers see and what they can purchase. Connecting the eCommerce store with operational systems helps bring those processes closer together.

Customer Retention Should Continue After the Migration

A new platform should not only support the first purchase. Klaviyo workflows gave Teaching & Learning Stuff a way to reconnect with customers and build automated communication around different stages of the customer journey.
